It's not a "guide" site per se, but it lets you browse by hardware type, and you can also look at what the various motherboards take.
I knew next to nothing about hardware when I first decided to build my computer. I educated myself on newegg. At least during the time I made my computer, newegg averaged the best prices for hardware.
www.hardforum.com is where I learned about hardware too. Check out the "Hot Deals" section.

Mike, this is the kind of question where you'll probably get a definitive answer at paid Q&A/Research site uclue.com
You'll need to offer a fee to the researcher (say, $10).

Go on crucial.com : It`s got a bit on the main page you can enter your manufacturer & model no. , and it`ll tell you what you need. Worked for me.
